Background and activities

In 2007, after reviewing and high-grading multiple suggested topics, the subcommittee decided to focus on Butte's historic mineyards as a project needing our attention. It was felt that such a project would
  • benefit the physical infrastructure of the mineyards,
  • would ultimately contribute to economic development through a Heritage Park,
  • would be sustainable through tourism,
  • would likely garner support from the public, and
  • for which some monies were already available.

Several field trips resulted in recommendations outlined in the PowerPoint Presentation linked on the mineyards page. To our great pleasure, some of our recommendations have already been enacted.

Later in 2007, with the goal of further implementing our charge from the Health Dept. and Historic Preservation Office to outline a plan for development of the mineyards as attractions for historic and cultural tourism, we drafted a "pretend" RFP (Request for Proposal) to the World Museum of Mining soliciting a management plan. That document was submitted to the Mining Museum Feb. 4, 2008, and can be reviewed here (Word document).

In early 2008, we were requested to provide a letter of support regarding the City-County's work on the Original Mine Yard for the National Folk Festival. Because these goals matched ours, we submitted such a letter, which can be reviewed here (PDF File).

Planning for 2008 is outlined in this draft agenda (Word document). This document is open for discussion and will form the core of our next few subcommittee meetings and e-mail discussions. Next meeting: Thurs. March 13, 2008, 7:00 p.m., Gibson's house, 301 N. Crystal.
